The green prescribing movement uses nature based activities to contribute towards improved mental and physical health. These activities support an individual to have new experiences, social connections and develop their deeper understanding of how green spaces can have a fundamental effect on their wellbeing.
Nature is beautiful! It decorates the space around us. Nature has many other positive purposes; one of these being greenery acts as a natural sound barrier due to plants absorbing and reflecting sound. Because of this, being around nature can bring a sense of calmness by reducing the noise pollution we often experience in towns and cities.
Additionally, plants can enhance air quality through purifying the air. They do this by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen – making the air we breathe healthier! An abundance of greenery improves biodiversity, which increases the variety of life in our ecosystems. As we continue to learn about nature and preserve greenery, this can help us feel purposeful and contribute to improving our wellbeing.
Accessing green space can contribute to positive mental health in different ways, depending on the activity. Overall, green space is essential to mental health and here are a few ways it can help us:
There’s a lot of research that links to positive mental health and being around nature. Studies show that just two hours a week in nature can improve mental wellbeing. If you don’t believe us – take it from some of our members here at SAGE. We support and encourage our members to engage in their areas of interest, which we hope will lead to reduced social isolation whilst improving well-being and resilience. Members have reported increased self-esteem and confidence as they progress and undertake new activities and experiences.
The green social prescribing sits within the overall social prescribing movement to help people live healthier lives through non-clinical methods. The 4 pillars of social prescribing are: physical activities, arts and cultural activities, economic advice, and nature-based activities. The goal is to promote equality and address health inequalities by providing easy access to this holistic way to wellness.Â

At SAGE, we continue to support our members and volunteers to prescribe greenery, social and creative activities so they can leave each week feeling satisfied. We only encourage individuals to pursue the areas they are interested in, whilst trying out new experiences at their own pace. We’ve found a holistic approach to wellness via horticulture has improved the lives of our members and volunteers. Sometimes the best remedy is closer to us than we may think, we just need a little help finding it. Â
